Burning man

This year three California-based prize-winning authors will share their wit and wisdom.

Alan Russell is the bestselling author of eleven novels, from whodunits to comedy to suspense. Publisher’s Weekly calls him “one of the best writers in the mystery field today”. Russell and his works have been nominated for most of the major awards in crime fiction.

Aline Ohanesian’s great-grandmother was a survivor of the Armenian Genocide, and it is her story which provided the idea for Orhan’s Inheritance. Questioning his grandfather’s will, Orhan’s investigation spans two continents and several generations, and deals with the Armenian tragedy.

Taffy Cannon is the author of fourteen mysteries, many of which have been award finalists. She wrote the ‘Booked for Travel’ mystery series under the pseudonym Emily Toll , and she has written an Academy Award-nominated short film. Her resume includes unusual jobs from carnival barker to professional feminist, and she has been a big winner on Jeopardy.

All proceeds from the luncheon will be go to the Sustaining the Mind campaign. $65, $75, or $90 to Suzie Kaplan, 6991 Batista St., San Diego 92111.

Meet guest speaker Lee Sterling, and see the award-winning film ‘Disobedience: the Sousa Mendes Story’.  Sterling’s own family and he, as a young child, were among tens of thousands saved by Sousa Mendes during the Holocaust.

This was considered to be the greatest single rescue effort by one individual during the Holocaust, and it was done by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, the Portuguese Consul serving in Bordeaux, France in 1940. Despite Nazi Germany’s occupation of France and disobeying his own government’s direct orders, he and his staff prepared visas for thousands of Jews escaping Nazi controlled France.

See the film and hear Lee Sterling’s story, followed by a discussion and dessert.  $15.00 (check to BNC) to Joyce Spiegel by November 1.

We accompany her as she treks through Ukraine’s graveyards, meets a gypsy baron and ‘the last Jew standing’, quaffs cognac with Russians, and hears the voices of her ancestors. Los Angeles Times called her book “as tense as a thriller and as tender as a love story” It is our story as well.
